Joseph Haldane ジョゼフ・ハルデイン

Biography プロフィール

Joseph Haldane is the Chairman and CEO of IAFOR. He is responsible for devising strategy, setting policies, forging institutional partnerships, implementing projects, and overseeing the organisation’s business and academic operations, including research, publications and events.

Dr Haldane holds a PhD from the University of London in 19th-century French Studies, and has had full-time faculty positions at the University of Paris XII Paris-Est Créteil (France), Sciences Po Paris (France), and Nagoya University of Commerce and Business (Japan), as well as visiting positions at the French Press Institute in the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas (France), The School of Journalism at Sciences Po Paris (France), and the School of Journalism at Moscow State University (Russia).

Dr Haldane’s current research concentrates on post-war and contemporary politics and international affairs, and since 2015 he has been a Guest Professor at The Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) at Osaka University, where he teaches on the postgraduate Global Governance Course, and Co-Director of the OSIPP-IAFOR Research Centre, an interdisciplinary think tank situated within Osaka University.

He is also a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Philology at the University of Belgrade, a Member of the International Advisory Council of the Department of Educational Foundations at the College of Education of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a Member of the World Economic Forum’s Expert Network for Global Governance.

From 2012 to 2014, Dr Haldane served as Treasurer of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (Chubu Region) and he is currently a Trustee of the HOPE International Development Agency (Japan). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society in 2012, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2015.

A black belt in judo, he is married with two children, and lives in Japan.

現在の研究は、戦後と現代の政治と国際情勢に焦点を当てており、2015年以来、大阪大学大学院国際公共政策研究科 (OSIPP) の招へい教授を務める。そこでは、大学院グローバルガバナンスコースを教え、大阪大学内にある学際的シンクタンクであるOSIPP-IAFOR研究センターの共同ディレクターを務める。

また、ベオグラード大学哲学学部の客員教授、ハワイ大学マノア校エジュケーションカレッジの教育基礎学部の国際諮問会議のメンバー、グローバルガバナンスに取り組む世界経済フォーラムのExpert Networkのメンバー。

2012年から2014年にかけて、在日米国商工会議所 (中部地域) の会計役を務め、現在、ホープ・インターナショナル開発機構 (日本) の評議員に就任。2012年に王立アジア協会のフェロー、2015年にロイヤル・ソサエティ・オブ・アーツの研究員に選ばれる。

Biography プロフィール

Haruko Satoh is Specially Appointed Professor at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), where she teaches Japan’s relations with Asia and identity in international relations. She is also co-director of the OSIPP-IAFOR Research Centre and she was previously part of the MEXT Reinventing Japan project on “Peace and Human Security in Asia (PAHSA)” with six Southeast Asian and four Japanese universities.

In the past she has worked at the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA), Chatham House, and Gaiko Forum. Her interests are primarily in state theory, Japanese nationalism and identity politics. 大阪大学大学院国際公共政策研究科特任教授。1965年生まれ。成蹊学園中等部、英国 Roedean Schoolを経て、1988年米国 Mount Holyoke College 卒業。その後、香港貿易発展局、日本国際交流センターなどで働いた後、Johns Hopkins 大学 School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)での修士課程を終え、日本国際問題研究所、英国チャタムハウスで研究交流活動。「外交フォーラム」編集員を務めた後、ケンブリッジ大学博士課程を経て、2011年より大阪大学。国際公共政策研究科では2011年度採択「大学の世界展開力強化」事業の特任准教授として東南アジア6大学との交流プログラムに5年間携わり、その関連事業として「ASEAN Career Fair with Japan in Singapore」を2013年に立ち上げた。研究関心分野は国家論、日本のナショナリズム、日中関係など。

Toshiya Hoshino 星野俊也

Biography プロフィール

His Excellency Ambassador/Dr Toshiya Hoshino was the Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations in New York until July 2020 and is presently on the faculty at the Osaka School of International Public Policy, Osaka University, Japan, as a Professor. His previous positions have included: Vice-President (Global Engagement) of Osaka University; Minister-Counselor in charge of political affairs at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations; Senior Research Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs; Guest Scholar at the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University; Fellow at Stanford Japan Center, Stanford University; Visiting Fellow, Princeton School of Public and International Affairs; and ​Special Assistant (Political Affairs) at the Embassy of Japan to the United States. He graduated from Sophia University, Japan, completed a Master’s at the University of Tokyo, and received his Doctorate (PhD) from Osaka University.
He is a specialist in United Nations multilateral diplomacy, global governance and human security, sustaining peace and sustainable development, security in the Asia-Pacific region, and Japan-US relations.

Yoshiho Ikeda 池田良穂

Biography プロフィール

Professor Yoshiho Ikeda is presently Professor Emeritus of Osaka Prefecture University and a Guest Professor of The Osaka University of Economics and Law. He served as Dean of Engineering of Osaka Prefecture University from 2011 to 2015. Currently, he is serving as the Secretary General of the Academic Society for Cruise and Ferry, Japan; he also established the society and served as its first president for six years.

His major is in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering – including technical and business aspects of cruising. As a technical advisor to the Japanese Government, he was a member of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Stability and Load Lines and on Fishing Vessels Safety (SLF) that met London to revise an international rule for the damage stability of ships.

He is an enthusiast of ships and cruising, and has enjoyed more than 120 cruises all over the world. He has already experienced two Japanese domestic cruises since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Professor Mariko Kawano is Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law, Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan (since 2004).
She gave a special course in the Hague Academy of International Law in 2009 on "The Role of Judicial Procedures in the Process of the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes" and the lecture was published in the Recueil des cours, Vol. 346 (2009), pp. 9-473. Her lectures are also provided in the Audio-visual Library of the United Nations. She has published various articles including: "International Courts and Tribunals and the Development of the Rules and Methods Concerning Maritime Delimitation", The Journal of International Law and Diplomacy, Vol. 112, No. 3 (2013), pp. 1-27, and "Compulsory Jurisdiction under the Law of the Sea Convention: Its Achievements and Limits", J. Atsushi Sunami is the President of The Sasakawa Peace Foundation, as well as the President of the Ocean Policy Research Institute of The Sasakawa Peace Foundation. He is also Director of the SciREX center and Executive Advisor to the President at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) and Guest Professor at the Research Organization for Nano & Life Innovation at Waseda University. He is currently serving as a member of the Basic Policy Group under the Committee on National Space Policy in the Cabinet Office, also as Chair of the Space Utilization Promotion Round-table under the Minister for Space Policy in the Cabinet Office. In addition, he is a member of the Innovation Strategy for Security and Safety at the Cabinet Office and on the Advisory Board for the Promotion of Science and Technology Diplomacy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan. He holds a BSFS from Georgetown University as well as an MIA and PhD in Political Science from Columbia University.

Dr Kazuhiro Tateda is a professor at Toho University’s Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He is also the president of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases and a member of expert panels advising the Japanese government on COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
He holds an MD cum laude from Nagasaki University School of Medicine (1985), and a PhD in Medical Science from Nagasaki University (1990).

Biography プロフィール

Koji Wada has been working as a professor, at the Department of Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Public Health, International University of Health and Welfare since April 2018. He has also served as the director of International Medical Cooperation of the International University of Health and Welfare.

He worked for the JICA Project for Improvement of Hospital Management Competency in Cho Ray Hospital in Vietnam as the chief advisor from January 2017 to March 2018. He had also worked in Myanmar as the advisor for HIV in 2014. He was also dispatched to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as an expert for public health response of yellow fever in 2016 as a member of the Japan Disaster Relief Team.

Dr Wada used to work as an associate professor in the Department of Public Health of Kitasato University to conduct various research projects such as pandemic flu response funded by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan. He had also served as the expert panel for pandemic flu in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare from 2008 to 2015.

Dr Wada has numerous scientific publications, including authorship of risk assessment of infectious diseases for Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He has received several noteworthy awards from the Japan Medical Association, the Japanese Society of Public Health, and the Japan Society of Occupational Health.

2017年1月から2018年3月まで、JICAベトナム国チョーライ病院向け病院運営・管理能力向上支援プロジェクトチーフアドバイザーを務め、出向にてJICAミャンマー国主要感染症プロジェクトHIV専門家として顧問も務めた。先般のコンゴ民主共和国における黄熱病の流行に対する国際緊急援助隊・感染症対策チームの派遣隊員として支援活動に従事。

厚生労働省が資金提供するパンデミックインフルエンザ対策など、さまざまな研究プロジェクトを実施するために、北里大学医学部公衆衛生学准教授として従事し、2008年から2015年に厚生労働省の新型インフルエンザ専門家会議委員・作業班員や都道府県での新型インフルエンザ等に関する委員会の委員を務める。

東京2020オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会に関与する自治体における感染症対策のためのリスク評価など多数の科学書物を出版し、日本医師会、日本公衆衛生学会、および日本労働衛生学会から賞を複数受賞。

Robert C Beckman
Emeritus Professor, Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore

Biography

Robert Beckman is the Head of the Ocean Law and Policy programme of the Centre for International Law (CIL) and was the founding Director of CIL. He is also an Emeritus Professor at the NUS Faculty of Law, where he taught Ocean Law & Policy for many years. He currently teaches a course in International Regulation of Shipping at the NUS Faculty of Law. Since 2009 he has lectured in the summer programme at the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy in Rhodes, Greece, and he is a member of the Governing Board for the Rhodes Academy. He has published widely on ocean law and policy issues. He is also a Senior Advisor to the Maritime Security Programme of the Institute for Defence & Strategic Studies (IDSS) at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He has been nominated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam as an Arbitrator under Annex VII of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. His research interests include, Ocean Law & Policy, Piracy and Maritime Security, International Regulation of Shipping, and Marine Environmental Law.

Evangelia Chrysikou

Biography

Dr Evangelia Chrysikou is a registered architect and senior research fellow at UCL. She owns the awarded SynThesis Architects (London – Athens), that specializes in medical facilities. Her work received prestigious awards (Singapore 2009, Kuala Lumpur 2012, Brisbane 2013, Birmingham 2014, London 2014). Parallel activities include teaching at medical and architectural schools, research (UK, France, Belgium, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Greece and the Middle East) and advisory. She advised the Hellenic Secretary of Health and is the author of the new national guidelines for mental health facilities. Dr Chrysikou is the author of the book 'Architecture for Psychiatric Environments and Therapeutic Spaces', healthcare architecture editor, reviewer, active member of several professional and scientific associations and a TED-MED speaker. She is a Trustee, Member of the Board and Director of Research at DIMHN (UK) and Member of the Board at the Scholar’s Association Onassis Foundation.

Alexis Papathanassis
Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, Germany

Biography

Since 2005, Dr Alexis Papathanassis has been Professor for Cruise Management and e-Tourism at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. Alexis is Dean for the Faculty of Management and Information Systems, Co-Director of the Institute for Maritime Tourism and Chairman of the Cruise Research Society. He is also visiting Professor at the Bremen University of Applied Sciences and the Russian Academy of Foreign Trade, and a member of the German Tourism Research Society. Alexis’ publication activity mainly focuses on the cruise sector and comprises over 100 contributions to textbooks, peer-reviewed scientific journals and conferences. He also acts as an academic reviewer for high-ranked tourism journals, including: Annals of Tourism Research, Tourism Management, Tourism Review, and the International Journal of Tourism Research. He also received the Emerald Literati Award for his paper: Papathanassis, A. (2017). Cruise Tourism Management: State of the Art. Tourism Review, 72(1): 104-119.

Besides being an advisory partner for Deloitte Consulting (Germany), he regularly acts as an independent consultant to numerous tour operators and cruise companies, working on numerous M&A and business development projects. Over the last years, Alexis has also participated in various national and international publicly-funded projects, aimed at cruise tourism development. Prior to joining fulltime academia, Alexis pursued a career at TUI, Europe’s leading tourism group. Joining the group as a management trainee in 1999, Alexis was appointed project manager & process engineer in 2001. In 2003, he became a business unit manager at TUI Contracting AG and was accountable for the company’s business interfaces and operations support areas.

Alexis graduated with a degree in Business Administration at the University of Bath in 1996. He gained his MSc in Analysis, Design and Management of Information Systems with distinction from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 1997. Following a military service in Greece and parallel to his professional career, Alexis successfully completed his PhD in Economic Sciences at the Leibniz University (Hanover) in Germany. His doctoral thesis focused on the post-merger management of information and communication technologies within the tourism sector. The corresponding doctoral dissertation was published by the Deutsche Universitätsverlag (DUV). In 2016, he was awarded a honorary PhD by the University of Ovidius (Romania) for his contribution to the cruise tourism research.

Maaike Okano-Heijmans
Clingendael – The Netherlands Institute of International Affairs, Netherlands

Biography

Maaike Okano-Heijmans is a Senior Research Fellow at the Clingendael Institute. She is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Leiden, where she has been teaching on ‘Non-Western Diplomacy’ in the Master of Science in International Relations and Diplomacy (MIRD) since 2012. Her main research interests are in connectivity, economic diplomacy and international relations in EU-Asia relations, with a special focus on China and Japan.

Maaike leads Clingendael’s projects on 'Geopolitics, great powers and global governance' for the Dutch Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, under the multi-annual PROGRESS framework. She is a regularly invited speaker at track 1.5 dialogues, think tanks and universities in Europe and Asia.
From 2016 until the end of the project in July 2020, she has been Clingendael's scientific coordinator for the Asia-Pacific Research and Advice Network (#APRAN), advising the European External Action Service and the European Commission.
Maaike is a board member of the European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN) and a member of CSCAP-EU (Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific), the track-two organisation promoting security dialogue in Asia. She is on the editorial board of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy (Martinus Nijhoff Publishers), the Clingendael Spectator (Clingendael's Magazine, in Dutch) and of the International Journal of Diplomacy and Economy.
She has lived and studied in the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia. Prior to joining Clingendael, she worked at the Japanese Embassy in the Hague. From 2008-2013 Maaike was a non-resident visiting fellow at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy of the Australian National University in Canberra. She was granted a Canon Foundation Research Fellowship in 2013.
In 2012, Maaike obtained her PhD in Political Science from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. She holds two Master's degrees: one in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam (2001) and another in International Relations from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan (2003). Furthermore, she studied the Japanese language at Leiden University, the Netherlands.

Remco van de Pas
University of Maastricht, Netherlands

Biography

Dr Remco van de Pas is a public health doctor and a global health researcher. He has a position as senior research fellow global health policy at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp and is a lecturer in Global Health at the Department of Health Ethics and Society, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University.
His teaching and research focuses on global health governance, its political-economy and foreign policy with a special attention on health workforce development and migration, health system strengthening, social protection and health financing, global health security, globalization and its impact on health equity.
Remco is a board member of the Medicus Mundi International–Network Health for All!, a visiting research fellow at Clingendael, Netherlands Institute of International Relations and editorial board member of the academic journal Globalization and Health.
He worked as health policy adviser for Wemos, a public health foundation advocating for social justice and health equity and as medical coordinator for the NGO Médecins du Monde, of which the largest part in West-Papua, Indonesia. Remco practiced medicine in mental health services for refugees and migrants in Rotterdam.
His PhD dissertation focuses on global health policy and the international governance of the health workforce and labor migration. The interface between public health, politics, and science potentially enables stronger health systems and equitable health outcomes from a cosmopolitan outlook.

Matthew Sullivan
East-West Center, United States

Biography

Matthew K. Sullivan is a Projects Coordinator at the East-West Center in Washington, where he assists with the research, planning, and implementation of EWCW’s grant-based projects. Matt received his Master’s Degree at Georgetown Walsh School of Foreign Service, Asian Studies Program where he focused on security and defense issues in Northeast Asia, as well as coursework in Mandarin Chinese.
Matt has also spent significant time and energy analyzing security and economic issues in East Asia outside of Georgetown. This includes working at the Simon Chair of Political Economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Armitage International LC, and the National Defense University. In addition to his work with EWC, he has published in The Diplomat and the Cornell International Affairs Review. Matt received his BA from Luther College.

Peter Valente
East-West Center, United States

Biography

Peter Valente is a programs coordinator at the East-West Center in Washington. He coordinates the Asia Pacific Bulletin and articles for the Asia Matters for America website, as well as the Young Professionals Program.
Mr Valente has published writing on peace and security issues within the Asia Pacific region as well as public diplomacy between the United States and Asia. He draws on extensive experience living and working in Asia, having spent stints of between four months and a year each in Japan, the Federated States of Micronesia, India, and Malaysia.
